Garland, Texas - February 4, 2008 -- Garland has embraced environmental stewardship for many years by implementing programs such as curbside recycling, xeriscaping, and even concrete recycling. Today Mayor Ronald Jones announced plans to organize and promote those initiatives and much more under the banner: Garland Goes Green.
As part of today’s announcement, Mayor Jones signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, becoming the 20th Texas mayor to do so. 780 mayors across the United States have signed this agreement which promotes good environmental stewardship in government, business and personal practices.
“This is a mayor’s initiative intended to bring added awareness to issues such as air quality, energy conservation, green building practices, recycling and other ways we can all reduce our impact on the environment,” said Mayor Jones. “Although this agreement does not bind our city to any legislative or contractual actions, it does allow us to take a public stand in favor of protecting our natural resources.”
City of Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller said, “Environmental vitality is a key component in maintaining the quality of life we all enjoy. We are pleased to join with our regional neighbors in supporting environmental measures that will help guarantee clean air, clean water and a greener environment for our citizens now, and in the future.”
Mayor Jones also formally introduced the City’s own commitment to promoting eco-friendly activities: Garland Goes Green. This ongoing program will promote education and implementation of environmentally friendly business practices and lifestyles. Through this campaign, the City will offer educational opportunities to citizens and pursue means of making its own operations ‘greener’.
The City of Garland and the Garland Chamber of Commerce are working together to host the Garland Goes Green Environmental Expo on Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Firewheel Town Center.
