Garland Youth Council Hosts      Safe Driving Expo for Teens

Teens and their parents are encouraged to visit the Garland Youth Council’s “Teens in the Driver Seat” Expo on Saturday, March 8, 2008 from noon to 4 p.m.  The event will include prizes, safe-driving tips, a chance to show support for each Garland ISD high school and much more.

The Garland Youth Council and student teams from all seven Garland ISD high school campuses launched the “Teens in the Driver Seat” (TDS) program last spring.  The program’s goal is to make teen drivers and their passengers more aware of the behaviors that put them at greater risk of being involved in a car crash.  The program utilizes the power of peer-to-peer communication to spread its message.

The Expo will be hosted at Firewheel Town Center in the park area.  It will feature TDS messages presented by high school campus teams, special information for parents provided by State Farm Insurance on how to train your teen to be a safe driver, tips on how to keep auto insurance rates lower with a teen driver in the family, and much more.

The event will also include a special driving course to help teens understand the impact of distractions and to test their safe-driving skills.  All driving course participants must be at least 15 years old and have a learner’s permit.  Parental permission is required.  Forms will be available on site and are also available at www.garlandyouthcouncil.org.

Teens who attend the expo can register to win door prizes.  When students register, they can specify which high school they attend.  The high school with the highest attendance will receive a special prize.  The first 75 students to register will automatically receive a special event t-shirt.

The Expo is sponsored by Firewheel Town Center, Dee Dee Bates State Farm Insurance, Major League Driving School and the Garland Youth Council.

All Garland youth are invited to participate in Garland Youth Council meetings and activities.  Go to www.garlandyouthcouncil.org for event updates, meeting schedules and other activity information.
