Garland Animal Shelter in Need of Pet Food Donations

Garland, Texas – October 28, 2008 -- The recent economic downturn has negatively affected Garland Animal Services in many ways.

For more than a decade the Animal Shelter has fed impounded animals exclusively with food donated from local businesses.  As economic times worsen food donations have dropped to the point where the Animal Shelter will soon be forced to purchase food to feed animals held at the Shelter.  Citizens wishing to help the Animal Shelter care for animals held there can donate cash, dry dog or cat food, or any other pet care items by dropping them off at the Garland Animal Shelter at 600 Tower Drive.  All donations, both money and supplies, are used exclusively for the care of animals.  The Shelter is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Another sign of the economic times is a decrease in the number of pet adoptions from the Garland Animal Shelter.  Animal adoptions have dropped more than 35% in the past year.  Rescue groups are also having trouble finding homes for rescued animals which has led such groups to rescue fewer animals from the Garland Animal Shelter.  If you are considering adding a pet to the family, please visit the Garland Animal Shelter first.  Adoption rates are very reasonable and a variety of dogs or cats are always available.
