Darren Lathen, District 8 Council Member, is in his first term on the Garland City Council.  He and his wife, Kathy, and daughter, Dana, moved to Garland in 2002.  They purchased their first home in 2005.

“Prior to buying our home, most of our community involvement was coordinated through church activities, food drives, painting houses, or other mission projects,” says Mr. Lathen.  “But when our daughter started school and we purchased our home, it made more sense to start getting engaged on local issues.”

Mr. Lathen first put his foot into governmental waters in 2006, serving on the City Council’s Ethics Board and Charter Review Committee.  “I was hoping to sit on a standing committee the following year.   I had thought about running for council in about 10 years or so, but several people approached me about doing so sooner.”

As a City Council member, Mr. Lathen believes in having less government.  His goal is to guard against creating “laws of personal preference” and to keep a watchful eye on the tax burden imposed upon the citizens.

Mr. Lathen is an IT professional for AT&T, handling a wide variety of special projects.  His wife teaches middle school in Dallas ISD and his daughter is a fourth grader in Garland.  He is an avid bicyclist, participating in cycling rallies every chance he gets.  The entire Lathen family enjoys camping and backpacking.

He says some of his favorite experiences as a citizen of Garland include “anything to do with my family like walking in the Labor Day Parade with the YMCA Adventure Guides; simple things like playing in Coomer Park or watching Dana play in Garland Volleyball Association; any of the family-friendly activities on the downtown square.”
